The documented history of the Ruins dates back to 1821, when Major Charles Wilhelm Bulow became the owner of more than 4,500 acres of land. Bulow cleared half of the wilderness and planted crops and a large sugar mill. The plantation remained extremely successful until it was burned down during a conflict with the Seminole Indians. Today, only a few walls of the sugar mill remain standing. Visitors and explorers now use the site for canoeing, hiking and picnicking.
Ormond-By-The-Sea enjoys a moderate climate of warm summers and mild winters. Average temperatures fluctuate between the low-90s in July and August and the high-40s in January and February. Rainfall throughout the year usually totals about 50 inches, with September being the wettest month.
